Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Raspberry Pi in Australia.

What is a Raspberry Pi?
A Raspberry Pi is a small, affordable single-board computer developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation in the UK. It runs Linux-based operating systems and can be used for everything from learning to code, to building IoT devices, media centres, retro gaming consoles, and industrial automation. The latest Raspberry Pi 5 features a quad-core 64-bit processor and up to 8 GB of RAM.
Which Raspberry Pi should I buy in 2026?
For most people, the Raspberry Pi 5 (8 GB) is the best choice — it's the fastest Pi ever and handles desktop use, coding, and projects with ease. If you want an all-in-one desktop, the Pi 500+ is a keyboard with a built-in Pi 5. For embedded and IoT projects, the Pi Zero 2 W is compact and affordable. For microcontroller projects (no operating system), choose the Pico 2.
What accessories do I need to get started with a Raspberry Pi?
At a minimum, you'll need a USB-C power supply (27W for Pi 5), a microSD card (32 GB+ recommended) or NVMe SSD with M.2 HAT+, and an HDMI cable. We also recommend the Active Cooler for sustained workloads and an official case for protection. Keyboard, mouse, and a monitor complete the setup.
Can I run Windows on a Raspberry Pi?
The Raspberry Pi is designed to run Linux-based operating systems. The official Raspberry Pi OS (based on Debian) is the best-supported option. You can also run Ubuntu, LibreELEC (for media), RetroPie (for gaming), and Home Assistant (for smart home). While experimental Windows on ARM builds exist, they're not officially supported or recommended.
Is the Raspberry Pi good for kids and education?
Absolutely! The Raspberry Pi was originally designed for education. It comes with Scratch, Python, and Thonny IDE pre-installed. It's used in schools worldwide to teach computer science, electronics, and physical computing. The Pico 2 is especially popular for teaching microcontroller programming with MicroPython.
What's the difference between a Raspberry Pi and an Arduino?
A Raspberry Pi is a full computer that runs an operating system (Linux). It can browse the web, play video, and run complex software. An Arduino is a microcontroller — it runs a single program and is great for controlling sensors and motors. The Raspberry Pi Pico 2 bridges both worlds, offering a microcontroller with the Pi ecosystem.
What operating systems can I run on a Raspberry Pi?
The official Raspberry Pi OS is recommended for most users. Other popular options include Ubuntu Desktop/Server, LibreELEC (Kodi media centre), RetroPie (retro gaming), Home Assistant OS (smart home), DietPi (lightweight server), and Kali Linux (security). Use the free Raspberry Pi Imager to flash any OS to your SD card.
Do you ship Raspberry Pi products Australia-wide?
Yes! Little Bird is an authorised Raspberry Pi reseller based in Australia. We ship to all Australian states and territories with fast, tracked shipping. Orders over $50 qualify for free standard shipping. We also offer express and same-day options for metro areas. All prices include GST — no hidden fees at checkout.
