The Hologram eUICC SIM Card is a mix between legacy and new technology for cellular service for your project. Hologram’s eUICC SIMs enable profile switching capabilities so you can work with Hologram to dynamically change the subscriber profile of the SIM while the devices are in the field over-the-air. For those looking for IoT cellular service with no intentions on switching cellular carriers, this SIM card is also for you.
eUICC features are limited to certain modules at this point. This includes the u-blox SARA-R4 module used on our SparkFun LTE CAT M1/NB-IoT Shield - SARA-R4. For these situations, the functionality will that of a normal SIM with cellular service through Hologram. You won't be able to change carriers.
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- IoT
- Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
- NB-IoT
- NB-IoT is a low-power cellular network standard designed for small amounts of data from remote devices. It matters for projects where the controller may need to send sensor readings from places without Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Shield
- An add-on board that plugs into a main controller board to give it extra features such as sensing, motor control or communication. Knowing a product supports shields helps you judge whether it can connect neatly into an existing maker-board setup.
