The SparkFun ESP8266 Thing is a breakout and development board for the ESP8266 WiFi SoC — a popular platform for IoT and WiFi-connected projects. All module pins are broken out to breadboard-compatible rows, and on-board power management includes a LiPo charger, 3.3V regulator, and power switch.

Program it through the Arduino IDE with the ESP8266 Arduino add-on, or use any other ESP8266-compatible toolchain. A 3.3V FTDI Basic (or compatible serial converter with DTR line) is required for programming.

Key Features

  • ESP8266 WiFi SoC – Built-in WiFi for IoT connectivity
  • LiPo Battery Support – On-board charger and JST connector
  • 3.3V Regulator – Safe, regulated power to the ESP8266
  • Breadboard Compatible – Pins broken out to two parallel rows
  • Arduino IDE Compatible – Program using the ESP8266 Arduino add-on
  • Power Switch – On/off control with LED indicators for power, charge, and status

Specifications

  • MCU: ESP8266
  • Operating Voltage: 3.3V (max 3.6V)
  • I/O Voltage: 3.3V (level shifting required for 5V signals)
  • Power Input: USB or LiPo battery
  • Programming: Via 3.3V FTDI serial converter (DTR line required)

Ideal For

  • IoT and connected device projects
  • WiFi-enabled sensor nodes
  • Battery-powered wireless applications
  • Learning ESP8266 development
Warning: The ESP8266 operates at 3.3V. Do not apply 5V signals directly to the I/O pins — use a level shifter for 5V logic.
