A simple breakout board for measuring moisture in soil and similar materials. The two large exposed pads act as probes — functioning as a variable resistor where higher moisture means better conductivity, lower resistance, and a higher signal output. This version includes a 3-pin screw terminal pre-soldered for easy wiring.
Connect VCC and GND to any Arduino-compatible board and read the analogue SIG output to determine moisture level. The PCB features a gold ENIG finish for improved corrosion resistance in moist environments.
Key Features
- Analogue Output – Signal level proportional to soil moisture content
- Screw Terminals – 3-pin terminal block pre-soldered for tool-free wiring
- ENIG Gold Finish – Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold for corrosion resistance
- Simple Interface – Just VCC, GND, and SIG — works with any analogue input
Ideal For
- Automated plant watering systems
- Garden and greenhouse monitoring
- Soil science experiments
- Environmental data logging

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
- GND
- GND is the ground or reference connection (0 V) for a circuit. When connecting two devices together, their grounds must be joined so both agree on what counts as a low or high signal.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
- Terminal block
- A terminal block is a connector that joins wires together in a neat, removable, or serviceable way, usually clamping each wire under a screw or spring instead of soldering. It makes it easier to connect, change, or service wiring without permanent joints.
- VCC
- VCC is the positive power-supply connection on a chip or module. Connecting it to the correct supply voltage is needed for the part to power on and helps avoid damaging the electronics.

This repo houses all of the SFE Fritzing parts for use in diagrams in tutorials. If you create a new part in Fritzing that correlates to an SFE part, please add it here so others may use it and to avoid duplication.
