SparkFun FT231X Breakout

SparkFun FT231X Breakout

Discontinued

The SparkFun FT231X Breakout is a 3.3V USB-to-serial breakout board featuring full UART hardware handshake support. Its pinout matches the standard FTDI cable, making it a drop-in solution for official and clone 3.3V Arduino boards as well as general serial applications.

The board brings out the DTR pin (rather than RTS), enabling Arduino auto-reset when uploading a new sketch — no need to press the reset button manually. All FT231X pins are broken out for maximum hackability, and it connects via a common micro-USB jack.

Key Features

  • Full UART Handshake – Complete hardware handshake support for reliable serial communication
  • FTDI Cable-Compatible Pinout – Works directly with Arduino boards that use a 6-pin serial header
  • DTR Auto-Reset – Automatically resets Arduino targets during sketch upload
  • All Pins Broken Out – Access every FT231X pin for custom applications
  • Selectable VCC Output – Rear solder jumper to switch between 5V (default) and 3.3V output
  • 5V Tolerant I/O – I/O pins tolerate 5V logic levels; operates down to 1.8V with external pull-ups
  • Micro-USB Connector – Standard micro-USB jack for easy connection
Note: This board ships configured for 5V output. To switch to 3.3V, cut the default solder jumper trace on the back and bridge the 3.3V pad. The maximum input voltage on the 3.3V pin is 3.3V.

Ideal For

  • Programming 3.3V Arduino boards without a built-in USB interface
  • USB-to-serial communication for microcontroller projects
  • Debugging and data logging via serial connection
