The SparkFun Cryptographic Development Kit provides everything you need to learn the fundamentals of cryptographic authentication using the ATECC508A co-processor. The kit pairs two ATECC508A breakout boards with two SparkFun RedBoard Artemis boards, allowing you to set up secure communication between two nodes for IoT, edge devices, or embedded systems.

The ATECC508A handles asymmetric key generation and storage (Elliptic Curve Cryptography, FIPS186-3), digital signature creation and verification, shared secret key exchange (ECDH), SHA-256 challenge-response authentication, and FIPS-grade random number generation. The RedBoard Artemis provides BLE connectivity, 1 MB of flash, and sub-1 mA sleep current in a familiar Uno footprint.

Key Features

  • ATECC508A Co-Processor – Hardware-based cryptographic authentication with secure key storage
  • Elliptic Curve Cryptography – Asymmetric key pair generation and 64-byte digital signatures
  • ECDH Key Exchange – Shared secret creation over public channels
  • SHA-256 Authentication – Standard hash-based challenge-response protocol
  • Qwiic I2C Interface – Plug-and-play connection, no soldering required
  • RedBoard Artemis – Artemis module with BLE, 1 MB flash, Uno-compatible footprint
Warning: The ATECC508A chip can only be configured once before it is permanently locked. Read the hookup guide thoroughly before configuring. It is advisable to have spare boards available to explore additional configurations.
Note: The ATECC508A is not capable of encrypting or decrypting data. It performs cryptographic authentication processes only — key creation, key storage, and digital signature operations. An Artemis-based microcontroller is recommended due to the I2C buffer size requirements.
