The Sharp GP2Y0A21YK is an infrared proximity sensor with an analogue voltage output that varies with distance — from 3.1 V at 10 cm to 0.4 V at 80 cm. It uses an IR emitter and position-sensitive detector to measure distance, making it unaffected by the colour or reflectivity of most objects.
The sensor terminates in a 3-pin JST connector. Use a JST pigtail cable for easy connection, or solder wires directly to the back of the module.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- microcontroller
- A microcontroller is a small computer on a chip that runs your program and controls connected inputs and outputs. For this product, it is the part that reads buttons and sensors, drives the display and speaker, and communicates over Bluetooth.
- Proximity sensor
- A sensor that detects when an object is nearby without needing physical contact. For this product it matters because the useful detection range is short, up to about 200 mm, so it suits touch-free triggers and close object detection rather than long-distance measuring.
