The Gravity VEML7700 is a high-accuracy digital ambient light sensor that outputs readings directly in lux (lx) over an I²C interface. Built around the Vishay VEML7700 IC, it features a 16-bit ADC, a high-sensitivity photodiode, and a low-noise amplifier — delivering precise light measurements without the need for manual voltage-to-lux calculations.

With a measurement range of 0–120,000 lx and a resolution of 0.0036 lx/ct, this sensor significantly outperforms basic photoresistors and the older BH1750 (limited to 65,000 lx). The Gravity I²C connector makes wiring straightforward with compatible DFRobot controllers and Arduino boards.

Key Features

  • Direct Lux Output – Digital readings in lux via I²C, no manual conversion required
  • High Precision – 0.0036 lx/ct resolution for accurate low-light measurement
  • Wide Range – 0–120,000 lx (up to 167,000 lx in extended mode)
  • 16-Bit ADC – High-resolution digitisation of light levels
  • Low Power Consumption – Suitable for battery-powered and IoT applications
  • Gravity I²C Interface – Plug-and-play connection to compatible controllers

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

ADC
An analogue-to-digital converter reads a changing voltage and turns it into a number the microcontroller can use. It matters when connecting analogue sensors such as light, sound, or variable-resistor sensors.
Ambient light sensor
A sensor that measures the general brightness of light falling on it, similar to how a device can adjust screen brightness automatically. It matters when you want a project to react to room lighting, daylight, shadows, or covered/uncovered conditions.
Gravity
Gravity is DFRobot’s plug-in connector system for sensors, motors and modules, using standard cables to reduce loose jumper wiring. It matters because Gravity-compatible parts can connect directly to these ports, while non-Gravity parts may need adapters or manual wiring.
IoT
Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
lux
Lux is the standard unit for measuring how much light falls on a surface, similar to how a light meter reports brightness. A sensor that outputs lux gives readings that are easier to compare between rooms, outdoor conditions, and different projects.
photodiode
A photodiode is a light-sensitive electronic component that produces a signal when light hits it. In this sensor, multiple photodiodes let the chip measure different parts of the light spectrum separately.
