The Gravity Analogue Capacitive Soil Moisture Sensor measures soil moisture using capacitive sensing rather than resistive probes, providing significantly better corrosion resistance and longer service life. Made from corrosion-resistant material for reliable long-term use in soil.
An onboard voltage regulator supports 3.3–5.5 V input, making it compatible with both 3.3 V and 5 V microcontrollers. The standard Gravity 3-pin interface allows direct connection to Gravity I/O expansion shields. For use with Raspberry Pi, an external ADC is required.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- ADC
- An analogue-to-digital converter reads a changing voltage and turns it into a number the microcontroller can use. It matters when connecting analogue sensors such as light, sound, or variable-resistor sensors.
- capacitive sensing
- Capacitive sensing detects changes in electrical capacitance, in this case caused by different amounts of water in the soil near the sensor plate. It matters because it avoids exposed metal probe contacts, which can corrode in damp soil over time.
- Gravity
- Gravity is DFRobot’s plug-in connector system for sensors, motors and modules, using standard cables to reduce loose jumper wiring. It matters because Gravity-compatible parts can connect directly to these ports, while non-Gravity parts may need adapters or manual wiring.
