Edo-Style Clock Kit from Gakken

Discontinued

Build your own beautiful dual-foliot Edo-period Japanese mechanical clock with this kit from Gakken. Edo-period clocks were unique timepieces that adapted Western clock-making techniques to tell traditional Japanese time, where day and night hours had different lengths depending on the season.

This kit features two foliots — one for day hours and one for night hours — that automatically switch at 6 AM and 6 PM using a verge escapement mechanism. Assembly takes about an hour and requires no prior clock-making experience.

Key Features

  • Dual-Foliot Design – Separate day and night hour mechanisms
  • Automatic Switching – Front and rear foliots switch at 6 AM/6 PM
  • Verge Escapement – Authentic early clock mechanism
  • ~1 Hour Assembly – Accessible for beginners
Note: Printed instructions are in Japanese. An English assembly guide is available for download — see Resources below.
