This flexible thin-film array gives robots, wearables and HCI projects a compact way to sense where pressure is being applied. It integrates 36 independent sensing points into a 15 x 15mm active area, enabling real-time pressure distribution mapping instead of a single force reading.

The bendable FPC sensor can act like electronic skin on robotic grippers, smart gloves, insoles or DIY dexterous hands. An adhesive backing helps it mount in tight spaces, while the 20 x 12mm adapter board keeps integration compact.

Data from all 36 channels is available over UART, with cascading support to reduce wiring complexity in multi-sensor builds. It is intended for Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi ecosystems, with Tactile Sensor Tool host software and embedded software support for rapid prototyping. The package includes an adapter board, 6×6 flexible array pressure sensor and 30cm flexible silicone connection cable.

Features:

  • 6×6 tactile matrix: 6 horizontal columns and 6 vertical rows provide 36 sensing points.
  • Pressure heatmaps: Captures real-time pressure distribution and localised pressure changes.
  • 2.5mm pitch: High-density sensing grid with a precision pitch of just 2.5mm.
  • Fast response: Microsecond-level response times (<10μs) for dynamic applications.
  • Ultra-compact integration: 15 x 15mm sensing area with a 20×12mm adapter board.
  • Adhesive-backed sensor: Mounts or embeds in space-limited grippers and wearable devices without structural modifications.
  • UART cascading: Reduces multi-sensor wiring complexity and avoids custom analogue acquisition circuitry.
  • Developer ecosystem: Supports Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi projects.
  • Flexible silicone cable: Includes a durable 30cm cable for easy connection.
  • Flexible FPC material: Ultra-thin, bendable construction for curved or moving surfaces.
  • Heat-resistant construction: Compact FPC structure remains resistant to deformation even under high temperatures.
  • High durability: Service life exceeds 1 million cycles with repeatability of ±5%.

Specifications:

  • Operating Voltage: 5V
  • Sampling Frequency: 20Hz / 50Hz
  • Sensing Area: 15 x 15mm
  • Array Configuration: 6 x 6 (36 points)
  • Communication Interface: UART
  • Trigger Force: 20g
  • Pressure Range: 20g ~ 5kg (per sensing point)
  • Pressure Type: Compression/Pressing
  • Durability: >1,000,000 times (at 1kg force)
  • Operating Temperature: -20℃ ~ +65℃
  • Adapter Board Size: 20 x 12mm
  • Sensing Point Pitch: 2.5mm
  • Response Time: <10μs
  • Repeatability: ±5%
  • Connection Cable Length: 30cm

For 3.3V microcontrollers, use suitable logic-level shifting on UART RX/TX. Match your serial read buffer to the native 20Hz/50Hz sampling rate, and avoid sharp contact edges; a thin silicone overlay can help distribute point loads across the grid.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

ESP32
ESP32 is a family of microcontroller modules with built-in wireless features such as Bluetooth and WiFi. Knowing this product uses an ESP32-based module helps explain how it provides wireless serial communication and firmware update features.
FPC
FPC stands for flexible printed circuit, a flat flexible cable or connector style often used where space is tight. It matters because this breakout needs the correct pin count and pitch FPC cable to connect reliably to the display or high-speed interface.
logic-level shifting
Logic-level shifting converts digital signals between voltage levels, such as 3.3V and 5V. It matters because it helps the module connect safely to microcontrollers that use different logic voltages.
UART
UART is a simple serial connection that sends data over separate transmit and receive wires, often labelled TX and RX. It matters because this module is designed to replace a wired UART cable with a wireless link while keeping the same serial data format.
