This Weather Meter Kit provides the three core sensors for a DIY weather station: an anemometer (wind speed), a wind vane (wind direction), and a rain gauge. All three sensors use passive magnetic reed switches rather than active electronics, making them simple to interface with any microcontroller.

All sensors terminate in RJ11 connectors for clean, standardised wiring.

Key Features

  • Anemometer – Closes a reed switch once per rotation; 1.492 mph (2.4 km/h) produces one closure per second
  • Wind Vane – Reports direction as a variable resistance via internal resistor network; magnet can close two switches simultaneously for up to 16 compass positions
  • Rain Gauge – Self-emptying tipping-bucket design; one reed switch closure per 0.011″ (0.28 mm) of collected rainfall
  • Passive Sensors – No active electronics; uses sealed magnetic reed switches for long-term reliability
  • RJ11 Connectors – All sensors terminate in standard RJ11 plugs

Ideal For

  • DIY weather stations with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or ESP32
  • Agricultural and environmental monitoring
  • Educational meteorology projects
  • Remote and off-grid weather logging
Note: Some basic assembly is required. An external voltage source and microcontroller are needed to take measurements — these sensors output passive switch closures and resistance changes, not digital data.

Package Contents

  • 1× Anemometer (wind speed sensor)
  • 1× Wind vane (wind direction sensor)
  • 1× Rain gauge (tipping-bucket type)

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

ESP32
ESP32 is a family of low-cost microcontroller chips and modules from Espressif with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth. They support programmable firmware and over-the-air updates, and are commonly programmed with toolchains such as the Arduino core and ESP-IDF.
microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
Reed switch
A small switch sealed in glass that opens or closes when a magnet is nearby. It is useful for simple door, lid, wheel, or position sensing because it can detect motion without needing to be pressed directly.
