The Ardumoto Shield is a dual-motor controller for Arduino based on the L298 H-bridge. It can drive two DC motors at up to 2A per channel, making it an excellent platform for RC vehicles and small autonomous robots.
The board draws power from the Arduino's Vin line and includes blue and yellow LEDs to indicate active motor direction. All driver lines are diode-protected from back EMF.
Key Features
- L298 H-Bridge Driver – Two independent channels for driving up to two DC motors
- 2A Per Channel – Delivers up to 2A per motor (depends on power source)
- Direction Indicator LEDs – Blue and yellow LEDs show active motor direction
- Back EMF Protection – All driver lines are diode-protected
- Arduino Shield Form Factor – Plugs directly into Arduino boards
Ideal For
- Two-wheel-drive robot platforms
- RC vehicle control
- Small autonomous robots

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- Headers
- Rows of metal pins used to plug a module into a breadboard or connect it with jumper wires. Pre-soldered headers make the module easier to use straight away without needing to solder the pins yourself.
- Shield
- An add-on board that plugs into a main controller board to give it extra features such as sensing, motor control or communication. Knowing a product supports shields helps you judge whether it can connect neatly into an existing maker-board setup.
