The Octopus TA12-100 is a non-invasive AC current sensor brick from ElecFreaks. It uses a current transformer to measure AC current flowing through a wire without needing to cut or splice the circuit — simply clamp it around the conductor. The sensor outputs an analogue voltage proportional to the detected current.

Part of the Octopus electronic brick series, it features a standard 3-pin interface for plug-and-play connection to Arduino boards via sensor shields.

Key Features

  • Non-Invasive Measurement – Clamp-on design measures AC current without breaking the circuit
  • Wide Detection Range – Suitable for a variety of AC current sensing applications
  • Fast Response – High sensitivity with stable, long-life operation
  • Simple Interface – 3-pin analogue output (Signal, VCC, GND) for easy integration
  • Octopus Brick Format – Compatible with Arduino sensor shields and Freaduino boards

Specifications

  • Operating Voltage – 5 V
  • Interface Type – Analogue
  • Pin Definition – 1: Signal, 2: VCC, 3: GND
  • Sensor Type – Current transformer (TA12-100)

Ideal For

  • AC current monitoring and energy metering projects
  • Arduino-based power measurement systems
  • Home automation current sensing
  • Educational electronics projects

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

GND
GND is the ground or reference connection (0 V) for a circuit. When connecting two devices together, their grounds must be joined so both agree on what counts as a low or high signal.
VCC
VCC is the positive power-supply connection on a chip or module. Connecting it to the correct supply voltage is needed for the part to power on and helps avoid damaging the electronics.
