This 50mm MagnetoPot provides potentiometric position feedback without needing a traditional external wiper or actuator. An outside magnet guides the built-in magnetic element, allowing the sensor to report position through a linear potentiometer output.
The sealed membrane-style construction makes it useful where contactless sensing is preferred, such as tracking the travel of a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder. Unlike a reed switch that only reports open or closed, the MagnetoPot can indicate position across its travel.
For liquid level applications, it can be mounted on the outside of a tank and used with a magnet inside a float, keeping the sensing element outside the liquid. This version is supplied with male pins, and a datasheet is provided for integration details.
Specifications:
- Resistance - Standard: 10k Ohms (lengths >300mm = 20k Ohms)
- Resistance - Custom: 5k to 500k Ohms
- Resistance Tolerance: ±20%
- Effective Electrical Travel: 8 to 1200mm
- Resolution: Depends on the exterior magnet strength and distance to the MagnetoPot
- Power Rating: 0.50 Watt continuous, 1 Watt Peak
- Dielectric Value: No affect @ 500VAC for 1 minute
- Independent Linearity: ±5% (±1% available)
- Hysteresis: 3mm*
- Life Cycle: >1 million
- Height: 3.50mm (0.138")
- Actuation Force: 0.09 to 0.11 lbs pull force at desired distance (pull force rating is for the exterior magnet using a test plate of cold rolled steel).
- Hysteresis note: Please note that the hysteresis is directly affected by the drive magnet size, strength, and distance from the internal magnet.
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- potentiometer
- A variable resistor usually turned with a knob or shaft to create an adjustable electrical signal. It is often used for inputs such as volume, brightness or position, so it helps beginners learn how a microcontroller reads changing values.
- Tolerance
- Tolerance tells you how far the real resistance value may be from the printed value. A 1% resistor is useful when a circuit needs more predictable behaviour than a looser 5% or 10% part.
