A simple-to-use MQ-6 gas sensor for detecting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) — primarily propane and butane — in the air. The sensor detects concentrations from 200 to 10,000 ppm with high sensitivity and fast response time.
The MQ-6 outputs an analog resistance that varies with gas concentration. The drive circuit is straightforward: power the heater coil with 5 V, add a load resistor, and read the output with an ADC on your microcontroller.
Key Features
- LPG Detection – Sensitive to propane, butane, and other LPG components
- Wide Detection Range – 200 to 10,000 ppm
- Fast Response Time – Quick detection of gas concentration changes
- Analog Output – Simple resistive output for ADC reading
- Simple Drive Circuit – 5 V heater coil + load resistor

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- ADC
- An analogue-to-digital converter reads a changing voltage and turns it into a number the microcontroller can use. It matters when connecting analogue sensors such as light, sound, or variable-resistor sensors.
- microcontroller
- A microcontroller is a small computer on a chip that runs your program and controls connected inputs and outputs. For this product, it is the part that reads buttons and sensors, drives the display and speaker, and communicates over Bluetooth.
- ppm
- ppm means parts per million, a common way to express very small gas concentrations in air. For CO₂ sensors, the ppm range tells you what levels the sensor can measure, such as normal indoor air through to poorly ventilated spaces.
