The Gravity Analogue Grayscale Sensor measures reflected light intensity, outputting an analogue value that ranges from black (low) to white (high). It uses a photocell paired with an integrated white LED to illuminate the surface being measured, making it effective for detecting surface brightness and colour differences.
Common applications include line-following robots, automatic lighting systems that respond to ambient light levels, and simple optical data transmission. The Gravity interface makes it easy to connect to Arduino and compatible boards without soldering.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- Gravity
- Gravity is DFRobot’s plug-in connector system for sensors, motors and modules, using standard cables to reduce loose jumper wiring. It matters because Gravity-compatible parts can connect directly to these ports, while non-Gravity parts may need adapters or manual wiring.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
- photocell
- A light-sensitive component whose electrical resistance changes with the amount of light falling on it. It matters when choosing or using light sensors, automatic lights, or brightness-detecting circuits because its response speed, resistance range, and sensitivity affect how reliably it detects light levels.
