The FINGER Unit (FPC1020A) is an all-in-one capacitive fingerprint sensor with built-in fingerprint registration, verification, and management. It communicates via UART and connects to M5Stack devices through the Grove C port. Configurable security levels and fast matching make it suitable for biometric access control projects.

Key Features

  • All-in-One Sensor – Integrated fingerprint collection, processing, and matching
  • UART Communication – Connects via Grove C port on M5Stack
  • Configurable Security – 5 security levels (default: level 3)
  • Fast Processing – Fingerprint matching in < 0.45 seconds
  • Compact and Low Power – Suitable for portable projects

Specifications

  • Fingerprint Capacity – 1000 / 1700 / 2000 / 3000 (default: 1700)
  • False Acceptance Rate – < 0.001% (security level 3)
  • False Rejection Rate – < 0.1% (security level 3)
  • Security Levels – 1–5 (default: 3)
  • Interface – UART
  • Baud Rate – 9600–115200 (default: 19200)
  • UART Settings – 8N1 (8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit)
  • Characteristic Size – 193 bytes
  • Processing Time – < 0.45 seconds
  • Operating Temperature – -10°C to 60°C
  • Operating Humidity – 20%–80%

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

baud
Baud is the signalling rate of a serial connection, often used as the speed setting for UART communication. Matching the baud rate matters because both connected devices must use the same setting for readable data.
Grove
Grove is a plug-in connector ecosystem for sensors and modules that avoids soldering and jumper wires. Grove compatibility matters because it can make it quicker to add supported I2C devices, as long as the cable and voltage are suitable.
UART
UART is a simple serial connection that sends data over separate transmit and receive wires, often labelled TX and RX. It matters because this module is designed to replace a wired UART cable with a wireless link while keeping the same serial data format.
