The Digital IR Proximity Sensor detects objects at distances from 1 to 400 cm using a 940 nm laser emitter. It's the advanced version of the SEN0381, offering a longer sensing range and an onboard status indicator LED.
Detection distance is adjustable — hold the onboard button for 3 seconds, then set your desired range. The sensor automatically saves the configured distance. Digital signal output makes it easy to integrate with Arduino and DFRobot IO Expansion Shields.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- DC
- DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
- IP67
- An ingress protection rating meaning the enclosure is dust-tight and can survive temporary immersion in water under specified test conditions. This matters when choosing a sensor for outdoor, wet, or wash-down environments.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
- Proximity sensor
- A sensor that detects the presence of a nearby object without physical contact, using methods such as infrared, ultrasonic, capacitive, inductive or time-of-flight. Useful ranges vary widely between types, from a few millimetres to several metres, so check a given sensor's specified range to see whether it suits close-up touch-free triggers or longer-distance detection.
- Short circuit protection
- A safety feature that helps protect the device if its output or wiring is accidentally connected in a way that causes excessive current flow. This matters in automation wiring because mistakes or damaged cables can otherwise destroy the sensor or power supply.
- Torque
- A twisting force that causes something to rotate, usually measured in newton-metres or kilogram-centimetres. It matters when choosing motors, servos, gears, and tools because higher torque is needed to lift heavier loads, turn larger wheels, or move mechanisms without stalling.
