Air:bit 2 is a STEAM drone kit for the BBC micro:bit that students build, code and fly. It combines the approachable micro:bit platform with a hands-on drone project for learning coding, engineering and technology.

Note: micro:bits are not included as standard with this kit. The supplier recommends 2x micro:bits per kit: 1x micro:bit for the drone and 1x micro:bit for the controller.

Students can build and code their own drone, then control it with code, an iPad or Android app, or a programmable remote made with another micro:bit. The kit can also be extended with a camera and sensors for taking pictures, FPV and advanced autonomous flights.

Kit includes: 1 MakeKit Air:bit flight board with charger; 1 high discharge lithium (LiPo) battery with fuse; 4 coreless high power electric motors; 8 propellers (4 spares); 1 complete Air:bit plywood frame; 5 propeller protection set; 1 remote control plywood holder; 27 nylon screws, nuts and bolts; 5 electrical aluminium spacers; 11 silicone rings; 2 rubber bands; accessory from the cardboard box.

Features:

  • Make:code or Java programming
  • Fly using a programmable remote (using a 2nd micro:bit) and app (iOS and Android)
  • Advanced measurements in real-time
  • Upgradeable with camera and multiple sensors

The Air:bit is designed for classroom activities across science, arts and crafts, coding, programming, engineering and mathematics. Students can also design and fabricate their own frames using a 3D printer, laser cutter or other classroom tools.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

LiPo
A LiPo (lithium polymer) battery is a rechargeable lithium battery widely used in portable projects because it is light and compact. LiPo cells need correct charging circuitry and careful handling to stay safe, so equipment that supports LiPo generally includes charging or protection hardware suited to that battery type.
