Air:bit is a STEAM learning kit that brings coding, engineering and flight together in a hands-on classroom project. Students build their own drone, learn how the parts work, and then program and control it using the familiar micro:bit ecosystem.
The kit combines the ease of use of micro:bit with the excitement of flying a drone. It can be controlled with code, an iPad or Android app, or with a controller built using another micro:bit.
Once students have explored engines, aerodynamics, batteries and more, they can extend the project by designing and fabricating their own frames using a 3D printer, laser cutter or other classroom tools. It suits science, arts and crafts, coding, programming, engineering, mathematics and related STEAM activities.
Kit includes:
- 1 MakeKit Lithium (LiPo) battery
- 1 MakeKit Air:bit board
- 1 Air:bit plywood frame
- 1 remote plywood holder
- 13 nylon screw
- 11 nuts
- 4 spacers
- 4 copper barrel nuts
- 8 propeller
- 4 Electric engines
- 1 red silicone ring
- 1 Rubber band
- 4 Wedges
The Air:bit comes with a 1 year warranty. This does not cover consumable parts such as propellers and cardboard accessories. The Air:bit is fully repairable by students and is designed to withstand plenty of crashes. Note: micro:bits are not included as standard with this kit.
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- LiPo
- A lithium polymer rechargeable battery commonly used in portable electronics projects. It matters because LiPo batteries need correct charging circuitry and care, and this board includes hardware intended for that battery type.
