The Adafruit USB C Breakout Board (Downstream Connection) gives you easy access to all the pins on a USB Type-C connector, configured for downstream device use. Two 5.1K resistors on the CC1 pins signal the upstream host to provide 5V at up to 1.5A, mimicking classic USB 2.0 behaviour.
For most projects, simply connect VBUS to your 5V input, GND to ground, and D+/D- as usual. The CC and SBU pins are broken out for advanced use cases like detecting cable polarity or sending sideband data, but can be left disconnected for standard USB 2.0 operation.
Key Features
- USB Type-C Connector – Symmetric, reversible connector for modern USB connections
- Downstream Configuration – Pre-configured with 5.1K CC resistors for device/sink mode
- All Pins Broken Out – Access to VBUS, GND, D+, D-, CC1, CC2, and SBU pins
- USB 2.0 Compatible – Works as a drop-in replacement for Mini or Micro B connectors
- Up to 1.5A – CC resistor configuration requests up to 1.5A from the host (actual current depends on the upstream source)
- Breadboard Friendly – Standard 0.1" pin spacing
- Compact Size – 20.4 × 14.2 × 5.0 mm (0.8" × 0.6" × 0.2")

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout is a small circuit board that makes a tiny or hard-to-solder component easier to connect to with standard pins. It matters because this OLED module can be wired into a microcontroller project without needing to solder directly to the display’s fine contacts.
- USB Type-C
- A reversible USB connector used for power and data on many modern devices. On this kit it indicates an alternate 5V power input, which may be useful for setup or charging without the solar panel.
- USB-C
- A modern reversible USB connector used for power and data connections. On this product it matters because it can connect directly to a computer as well as to a microcontroller project.
- VBUS
- A label often used for the main bus or supply voltage being measured or distributed on a board. Knowing what VBUS refers to helps you wire the monitor to the correct point in the circuit, especially for high-side measurements.
