The Adafruit TSMP96000 "Code Learning" Infrared IR Receiver Breakout detects IR signals across a wide frequency range of 20–60 KHz, making it perfect for "code learning" applications where you need your device to work with any IR remote control — even when you don't know the carrier frequency.

Unlike standard 38 KHz IR receivers that output a demodulated signal, this breakout delivers the modulated IR signal with the carrier intact, allowing your microcontroller to analyse both the data and the carrier frequency. A green power LED and red signal LED provide instant visual feedback during operation.

Key Features

  • Wide Frequency Detection – Receives IR signals from 20 to 60 KHz, covering virtually all consumer IR remotes
  • Code Learning Ready – Outputs the modulated signal with carrier intact for full signal analysis
  • 3–5V Compatible – Works with both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers
  • STEMMA JST PH Connector2mm pitch 3-pin connector for solderless wiring
  • Visual Indicators – Green power LED and red signal LED for easy debugging
  • Mounting Holes – Easy to mount in enclosures and on devices
  • Compact Size – 25.4 × 17.7 × 7.1 mm (1.0" × 0.7" × 0.3")

Ideal For

  • Universal remote control learning and cloning projects
  • IR signal analysis and reverse engineering
  • Multi-protocol IR receiver systems
  • Home automation projects requiring broad IR compatibility

Package Contents

  • 1× Adafruit TSMP96000 IR Receiver Breakout (fully assembled and tested)
Note: Cable not included. A 2mm pitch, 3-pin STEMMA JST PH cable is required for solderless connection. Alternatively, you can solder directly to the 0.1" spaced header for power, ground, and signal.
Important: This board outputs a non-demodulated signal — it is not compatible with most standard IR decoding libraries. Make sure your code is specifically designed for "code learning" applications.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

2mm pitch
Pitch is the distance between the centres of neighbouring pins on a connector. A 2mm pitch header is smaller than the common 2.54mm breadboard spacing, so you need matching cables and headers rather than standard breadboard jumper leads.
38 kHz IR
Infrared light that is switched on and off 38,000 times per second, a common carrier frequency used by IR remotes and beam sensors. Matching this frequency matters because the receiver is tuned for it and will ignore much of the steady or random infrared light in the environment.
breakout
A breakout is a small circuit board that makes a tiny or hard-to-solder component easier to connect to with standard pins. It matters because this OLED module can be wired into a microcontroller project without needing to solder directly to the display’s fine contacts.
JST PH
A small keyed plug-and-socket connector with 2 mm pin spacing, often used for low-power electronics connections. You need the correct JST PH cable, and its current rating limits how much power should be passed through it.
LED
A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a chip that runs your program and controls connected inputs and outputs. For this product, it is the part that reads buttons and sensors, drives the display and speaker, and communicates over Bluetooth.
modulated IR
Infrared light that is pulsed in a controlled pattern instead of being left on continuously. Using modulation helps the sensor distinguish the intended IR source from sunlight, room lighting, and other background infrared.
pH
A measure of how acidic or alkaline a liquid is, on a scale where 7 is neutral. For a water monitoring kit, pH tells you about water chemistry and whether the included probe matches the range and accuracy your project needs.
STEMMA
A plug-and-cable connection system used on some maker electronics boards to make wiring simpler. If a product uses STEMMA, you need the matching cable or connector type to plug it in without soldering.
