An Arduino-compatible shield for controlling up to 8 channels of EL (electroluminescent) wire or tape. Each channel uses opto-isolated, zero-crossing control for safe and reliable switching. Control EL wire as simply as turning an LED on and off, or use PWM for colourful animated effects.
Compatible with both 5V and 3.3V Arduino boards. Comes with 4 EL wire adaptors (additional adaptors available separately). A 5V invertor is required to power the EL wire (not included).
Key Features
- 8 Channels – Control up to 8 EL wires or tapes independently
- Opto-Isolated – Zero-crossing control for each channel
- PWM Compatible – Create animated lighting effects
- 5V / 3.3V Compatible – Works with standard Arduino boards
Package Contents
- 1× 8-Channel EL Shield
- 4× EL Wire Adaptors

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
- PWM
- Pulse Width Modulation is a way for a digital pin to simulate variable output power by switching on and off very quickly. It matters for controlling things like LED brightness, motor speed, or servo-style signals from a microcontroller pin.
- Shield
- An add-on board that plugs into a main controller board to give it extra features such as sensing, motor control or communication. Knowing a product supports shields helps you judge whether it can connect neatly into an existing maker-board setup.
