The SRF08 is an evolutionary step up from the SRF04. It requires less power to operate, has a longer range (up to 6m) and it performs its own internal timing of the return echo. The SRF08 is also fitted with an LDR to measure light levels.

Communication with the SRF08 is via the I2C bus that is available on many popular microcontroller's.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

I2C
I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
photocell
A light-sensitive component whose electrical resistance changes with the amount of light falling on it. It matters when choosing or using light sensors, automatic lights, or brightness-detecting circuits because its response speed, resistance range, and sensitivity affect how reliably it detects light levels.
