The FP platform is a high-precision GNSS receiver system built around SparkFun’s modular Flex System, designed to be repairable, user-upgradeable and ready for long service life.

This FPL version comes fully assembled with the Quectel LG290P module installed, delivering modern multi-frequency RTK positioning with Galileo HAS support.

The receiver can be opened and the module swapped out in around five minutes with a Phillips head screwdriver. It uses open-source firmware, with a product manual, LG290P datasheet and firmware repository provided in the supporting documentation.

Features:

  • Capable of L1/L2/L5/E6 reception with Galileo HAS support.
  • MFi certified, ensuring compatibility with iOS devices.
  • Enclosed high-powered 1W LoRa radio.
  • IP67 rated cast-aluminium housing with a reinforced dome.
  • Affordable and competitive price point when compared to similar devices.
  • The LG290P is capable of 8mm horizontal accuracy when receiving RTK corrections.
  • Internal battery with over 50 hours of runtime.

A solid choice for survey, mapping, robotics, field data collection and other applications that need accurate, rugged and serviceable GNSS hardware.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

Galileo
Europe’s satellite navigation system. Galileo support can improve satellite availability and accuracy, especially when combined with GPS and other constellations.
GNSS
GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System, an umbrella term for satellite positioning networks such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou. Receivers use these satellites to determine position, and high-precision units can output a steady stream of serial position data.
IP67
An ingress protection rating meaning the enclosure is dust-tight and can survive temporary immersion in water under specified test conditions. This matters when choosing a sensor for outdoor, wet, or wash-down environments.
L5
A modern GNSS signal band used by several satellite systems for more accurate and robust positioning. Dual-band receivers that include L5 can often perform better than single-band receivers, especially for RTK and areas with reflected signals.
LoRa
LoRa is a long-range, low-power wireless radio technology often used for telemetry, remote sensors and other links that send small amounts of data over long distances. It is distinct from Bluetooth and WiFi, so sharing a connector or pinout with LoRa hardware does not mean a device actually uses LoRa.
RTK
Real-Time Kinematic positioning is a GNSS technique that uses correction data from a base station to greatly improve location accuracy. It matters if you need centimetre-level positioning for robotics, mapping, surveying, or tracking rather than ordinary metre-level GPS accuracy.
