The SparkFun Capacitive Touch Breakout provides a single momentary touch button using the AT42QT1011 capacitive sense chip. Simply supply 1.8–5 V and ground — the chip handles all touch monitoring and outputs a digital high signal when a touch is detected, low when released.

Unlike the AT42QT1010, this variant has no internal time-out, meaning the output stays high for as long as a touch is held. A PAD pin is broken out for connecting an external electrode to create custom touch surfaces.

Key Features

  • Single Capacitive Touch Button – Momentary digital output (high when touched)
  • No Time-Out – Output remains high for the full duration of a touch
  • Wide Voltage Range – Operates from 1.8–5 V
  • External Electrode Support – PAD pin for custom touch surfaces
  • Simple Digital I/O – No library or complex setup required

Specifications

  • IC – AT42QT1011
  • Operating Voltage – 1.8–5 V
  • Output – Digital high (touched) / low (released)
  • Time-Out – None (output held indefinitely during touch)

Ideal For

  • Button-free user interfaces
  • Interactive art and installations
  • Proximity-triggered projects (with external electrode modification)
  • Arduino and microcontroller input

Package Contents

  • 1× SparkFun Capacitive Touch Breakout (AT42QT1011)
Tip: For proximity sensing (triggering without direct contact), try replacing the 10 nF capacitor at C2 with a 100 nF capacitor and using an external electrode. See the hookup guide for details.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

breakout
A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
