If you have any LEGO Mindstorm or EV3 sensors/motors/controllers you probably noticed the phone-cable-like connectors that are used to go from accessories to controller boards. However, you can't use every-day phone jacks or cables because the little plastic clip is on the sidenot the center. No need to give up your dreams of interfacing with NXT parts, though! These jacks are just the right type to let you plug in those cables and expose the 6 wires.
The connector can be wired up to either provide or consume 5V power and I2C or digital/analog data. Could make for some fun hacking and interfacing by connecting to a Raspberry Pi or Arduino board! Check online for wiring diagrams and schematics.
Comes in a pack of 10 jacks, no breakout board is provided, this is just the mechanical jack part.
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
- I2C
- I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
