This stuff is called "wire-wrap wire" because it used to be used for wire-wrapping high-speed digital circuits on a special kind of contact board. It's pretty rare to see wire-wrapping in these days of low-cost PCB fabrication, but the wire is still really handy for prototyping work.

It's extremely thin (30 AWG!), so your wiring won't get bulky, and it is just stiff enough to hold its shape around corners. It's most commonly used for SMT rework ('oh man i swapped two pads') or repair ('ok let's bridge this via to that via to fix a broken trace'), but it's also great when you need to get a signal from here to there through a small space.

This wire wrap wire comes in 8 colors, 35 meters of each color for 280 meters total:

  • 35 meters of Red
  • 35 meters of Orange
  • 35 meters of Yellow
  • 35 meters of Green
  • 35 meters of Blue
  • 35 meters of Purple
  • 35 meters of Brown
  • 35 meters of Black

You have to unwind it in parallel but you save from having to own 8 separate spools, how handy!

Since it's very fine wire, and many hobby-grade wire strippers are not super precise, we suggest our Hakko Pro wire strippers for the best insulation-removal experience.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

AWG
American Wire Gauge is a numbering system for wire thickness, where a lower number means a thicker wire. The AWG rating matters because thicker wire can usually carry more current with less voltage drop and heating.
PCB
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
