This 80GHz millimetre-wave radar module is built for precise, non-contact liquid level detection. Using Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar, it measures from above the liquid surface, making it suitable for corrosive, hazardous or high-purity liquids where contact probes are not ideal.

With a measurement range up to 40m, ±5mm accuracy and 1mm resolution, it is suited to applications such as reservoirs, rivers, deep industrial tanks, sewage overflow warning systems, rainwater collection systems and wastewater treatment pools. The supplied lens provides a focused narrow beam to help reduce interference from tank walls, agitators and nearby structures.

The module communicates over UART using the Modbus protocol, making it practical for integration into monitoring and control systems. DFRobot provides a product wiki for setup and reference.

Included in the pack are the 80GHz Liquid Level Millimeter Wave Radar Module (with lens) ×1, a 1.25mm 6-pin to bare wire cable ×1, and a 1.25mm 6-pin to Dupont connector cable ×1.

Features:

  • Non-contact liquid level detection: Installs above the liquid surface to avoid direct contact with the measured medium.
  • Long-range measurement: Suitable for monitoring large bodies of water and deep industrial tanks.
  • High precision: Provides ±5mm accuracy and 1mm resolution for granular level data.
  • Focused detection: The supplied lens narrows the beam to help reduce interference from surrounding structures.
  • FMCW radar technology: Designed for robust performance in challenging environments.
  • Environmental immunity: Performance is unaffected by temperature fluctuations, pressure changes, fog, mist or dust.
  • Anti-interference algorithm: Helps maintain stable operation in environments with strong reflections or multiple targets.
  • UART Modbus interface: Provides a standard communication interface for industrial and embedded systems.

Specifications:

  • Transmit frequency: 77–81GHz, 4GHz bandwidth
  • Output power (EIRP): 13–20dBm
  • Beamwidth (-3dB): Horizontal ±25°, Vertical ±25°
  • Beamwidth (-3dB) with external lens: Horizontal ±3°, Vertical ±3°
  • Modulation mode: FMCW
  • Ranging range: 0.15–40m
  • Accuracy: ±5mm
  • Resolution: 1mm
  • Startup time: 100ms (fastest)
  • Operating voltage: 3.5–5V
  • Operating current: 30mA
  • Output: UART (Modbus protocol)
  • Operating temperature: -45°C to +85°C
  • Module dimensions: 35×35×1.2mm
  • Module weight: 5g
  • Weight with installed lens: 46g

A strong fit for smart water management, industrial process control, environmental monitoring and disaster prevention systems requiring accurate level alarms.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

5G
5G is the fifth-generation mobile network standard, offering higher-speed, lower-latency wireless data than earlier 4G/LTE networks. 5G modems can move large amounts of data over cellular networks but may draw significant current and need a suitable aerial and reliable power.
FMCW
Frequency-modulated continuous wave is a radar method that sends a changing radio signal and compares the reflection to estimate movement and distance. It matters for presence sensors because it can provide more detailed detection than a simple motion-only sensor.
Modbus
Modbus is an industrial communication protocol used by many meters, sensors, PLCs and automation devices. When a product lists Modbus support, it is generally easier to integrate with existing industrial equipment that speaks the same protocol.
UART
UART is a simple asynchronous serial interface that sends data over separate transmit and receive wires, usually labelled TX and RX, with both ends set to the same baud rate. It is a common way for microcontrollers and other serial devices to exchange data.
