This small LCD shutter panel acts as a single-pixel LCD display that switches between transparent and opaque states. Apply 3V to polarise the panel and it goes completely black; pull the voltage low or short the terminals and it becomes transparent again. Extremely low current draw makes it easy to drive from a microcontroller.
The shutter behaves like a low-value capacitor — once energised, it holds its opaque state but slowly leaks charge and becomes transparent over time. Best viewed from directly in front, as off-angle viewing may reduce opacity slightly. The panel is made of glass with sharp corners, so handle with care.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- LCD
- LCD stands for liquid crystal display, a screen technology that uses a backlight and liquid crystals to show images or text. It matters because LCD modules usually need a display driver and enough controller pins or a bus interface to send image data.
- microcontroller
- A microcontroller is a small computer on a chip that runs your program and controls connected inputs and outputs. For this product, it is the part that reads buttons and sensors, drives the display and speaker, and communicates over Bluetooth.
