This industrial CO2 probe is built for reliable carbon dioxide monitoring in environments such as indoor air quality systems, pipelines, greenhouses and fresh air systems. It uses NDIR sensing to measure CO2 from 400 to 5000 PPM and supports manual calibration for dependable readings.
The IP65-rated plastic housing uses a threaded fixed installation design with an M18 mounting thread, making it suitable for permanent installation. The sensor head includes a waterproof, breathable polymer membrane to help prevent water vapour and dust ingress while maintaining air permeability.
Data is provided over an RS485 interface using the standard Modbus-RTU protocol, ready for integration with controllers and industrial monitoring systems. For prototyping, it can be used with modules such as DFRobot's Gravity RS485 to UART active isolation signal conversion module (DFR0845) and platforms such as Arduino UNO R3.
The package includes one RS485 Infrared CO2 Sensor (400-5000ppm), and DFRobot provides a product wiki for setup reference.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- Gravity
- Gravity is DFRobot’s plug-in connector system for sensors, motors and modules, using standard cables to reduce loose jumper wiring. It matters because Gravity-compatible parts can connect directly to these ports, while non-Gravity parts may need adapters or manual wiring.
- Modbus
- Modbus is an industrial communication protocol used by many meters, sensors, PLCs and automation devices. When a product lists Modbus support, it is generally easier to integrate with existing industrial equipment that speaks the same protocol.
- ModBus-RTU
- ModBus-RTU is a common industrial protocol for sending readings and control commands over serial links such as RS485. Knowing a device uses ModBus-RTU helps you choose software libraries, data loggers, or controllers that can request and interpret its data.
- ppm
- ppm means parts per million, a common way to express very small gas concentrations in air. For CO₂ sensors, the ppm range tells you what levels the sensor can measure, such as normal indoor air through to poorly ventilated spaces.
- RS485
- RS485 is a robust differential serial communication standard often used in factories, farms and buildings where cables may be long or electrically noisy, and it can link many devices on a single pair of wires. When a product lists RS485, it can communicate with industrial sensors, meters and control equipment over longer distances than typical hobby serial wiring.
- Thread
- A low-power wireless mesh networking standard designed for smart home and IoT devices. It matters because Thread devices can relay messages through each other, helping build reliable networks for sensors and controllers.
- UART
- UART is a simple asynchronous serial interface that sends data over separate transmit and receive wires, usually labelled TX and RX, with both ends set to the same baud rate. It is a common way for microcontrollers and other serial devices to exchange data.
