This industrial-grade chlorophyll sensor measures chlorophyll concentration in water using the fluorescence principle, making it useful for algae monitoring in rivers, lakes, ponds, aquaculture systems and field research sites.
The probe and housing are integrated into a single waterproof unit, with fibre optic light transmission and internal filtering algorithms to help resist external light interference. It outputs both chlorophyll and relative fluorescence intensity data, so readings can be analysed against real-world water conditions.
Communication is via RS485 using the standard ModBus-RTU protocol, with tutorials provided for connecting to Arduino development boards and DFRobot LoRaWAN systems. A built-in temperature sensor provides automatic temperature compensation, and the sensor is factory calibrated so it is ready to use without further calibration.
Included in the box is the RS485 Water Quality Chlorophyll Sensor x1 and 5m sensor cable x1.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- DC
- DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
- Fluorescence method
- A fluorescence method measures how much light a substance emits after being excited by another light source, using that glow to estimate the amount of a target substance. It measures optically and in real time rather than relying on chemical test strips or lab samples.
- Modbus
- Modbus is an industrial communication protocol used by many meters, sensors, PLCs and automation devices. When a product lists Modbus support, it is generally easier to integrate with existing industrial equipment that speaks the same protocol.
- ModBus-RTU
- ModBus-RTU is a common industrial protocol for sending readings and control commands over serial links such as RS485. Knowing a device uses ModBus-RTU helps you choose software libraries, data loggers, or controllers that can request and interpret its data.
- RFU
- RFU stands for Relative Fluorescence Units, a comparative measure of how strong a fluorescence signal is. RFU readings are useful for tracking relative changes over time, but they are not an absolute concentration unless interpreted with calibration and context.
- RS485
- RS485 is a robust differential serial communication standard often used in factories, farms and buildings where cables may be long or electrically noisy, and it can link many devices on a single pair of wires. When a product lists RS485, it can communicate with industrial sensors, meters and control equipment over longer distances than typical hobby serial wiring.
- Temperature compensation
- Temperature compensation is when a sensor or instrument adjusts its readings to reduce errors caused by changes in temperature. This matters because a sensor's raw output often drifts as conditions warm or cool, so compensation keeps readings more consistent and accurate over time.
