The DDSM315 is a direct drive servo motor from Waveshare that combines a brushless outer rotor motor (PMSM), encoder, and servo driver into a single compact unit. By eliminating a traditional gearbox reducer, it achieves zero-backlash positioning with ultra-low noise (≤50 dB), making it well suited for robotics and RC vehicle applications.

The motor communicates via RS485 bus, allowing multiple units to be coordinated on a single communication line. It supports current loop, position loop, and velocity loop operating modes, and includes Hall position detection and over-current protection.

Key Features

  • Direct Drive (No Gearbox) – Zero backlash, high precision, reduced mechanical complexity
  • All-in-One Design – PMSM motor, 12-bit encoder, and servo driver integrated
  • Ultra-Low Noise – ≤50 dB during operation
  • RS485 Bus Communication – Daisy-chain multiple motors on one bus
  • Three Operating Modes – Current loop, position loop, and velocity loop
  • IP54 Rated – Dust and splash-water protection
  • Over-Current Protection – With Hall position detection

Specifications

  • Rated Voltage – 18 V DC (compatible with 5S LiPo)
  • Speed Constant – 17.5 RPM/V
  • No-Load Speed – 315 ±10 RPM
  • Rated Speed – 200 RPM
  • Rated Torque – 0.55 N·m
  • Stall Torque – 1.1 N·m
  • Encoder Resolution – 12-bit
  • Communication – RS485 bus
  • Protection Rating – IP54
  • Operating Temperature – −20°C to 45°C

Ideal For

  • RC car and vehicle builds
  • Home and commercial robotics
  • UGV robot chassis
  • Multi-motor coordinated systems

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

encoder
A device attached to a motor or shaft that reports movement, such as rotation steps or position. In a pump system, an encoder can help measure or control how much the motor has turned, which affects how repeatable the watering amount can be.
IP54
An ingress protection rating meaning the enclosure has limited dust protection and is protected against water splashes from any direction. This matters because it gives a practical indication of how well the product may handle dusty or damp installations.
LiPo
A lithium polymer rechargeable battery commonly used in portable electronics projects. It matters because LiPo batteries need correct charging circuitry and care, and this board includes hardware intended for that battery type.
RS485
RS485 is a robust wired serial communication standard often used in factories, farms, and buildings where cables may be long or electrically noisy. It matters because it lets this controller connect to industrial sensors, meters, and control equipment over longer distances than typical hobby serial wiring.
servo
A servo is a motor with built-in position control, usually told to move to a specific angle by a control signal. It matters when you need repeatable movement, such as steering, arms, flaps, or linkages, rather than continuous spinning.
servo motor
A motor module that moves to a commanded angle rather than simply spinning freely. It matters for robotics and mechanisms because it is useful for steering, arms, gates and other parts that need controlled position.
Stall torque
The maximum twisting force a servo can produce when its output is held still and cannot move. It helps you judge whether the servo is strong enough for a robot joint, steering linkage, or other load.
Torque
A twisting force that causes something to rotate, usually measured in newton-metres or kilogram-centimetres. It matters when choosing motors, servos, gears, and tools because higher torque is needed to lift heavier loads, turn larger wheels, or move mechanisms without stalling.
