The Panasonic AMG8832 Grid-EYE is an infrared array sensor evaluation board featuring a 64-pixel (8×8) thermal imaging sensor in an all-in-one SMD package. It detects absolute surface temperatures from -20°C to +100°C without contact, and can identify the position, presence, and movement direction of people and objects — including stationary ones.

The evaluation kit includes a PAN1740 Bluetooth module (BLE v4.0) for wireless connectivity to Android and iOS devices, plus Arduino-compatible headers for integration with an Arduino DUE. Two operating modes — standalone and Arduino — are switchable via jumpers, giving you flexibility for prototyping IoT and sensing applications.

Key Features

  • 8×8 IR Pixel Array – 64-pixel thermal imaging with patented 60° silicon lens
  • Contactless Temperature Detection – Measures surface temperatures from -20°C to +100°C
  • People & Object Detection – Detects position, presence, and movement direction
  • Bluetooth LE Connectivity – PAN1740 module with BLE v4.0 for Android and iOS
  • Dual Operating Modes – Standalone or Arduino mode, switchable with jumpers
  • Arduino Compatible – Headers installed for direct connection to Arduino DUE
  • JTAG with Reset – For advanced development and debugging

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

BLE
BLE stands for Bluetooth Low Energy, a Bluetooth mode designed for lower power use and modern phone compatibility. It matters because BLE support can make the module easier to use with Apple devices and battery-powered projects, though it may behave differently from classic serial Bluetooth.
Headers
Rows of metal pins used to plug a module into a breadboard or connect it with jumper wires. Pre-soldered headers make the module easier to use straight away without needing to solder the pins yourself.
I2C
I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
IoT
Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
JTAG
JTAG is a hardware debugging and programming interface used to inspect and control chips at a low level. It matters for advanced development because it can help diagnose firmware problems that are hard to see through normal serial output.
UART
UART is a simple serial connection that sends data over separate transmit and receive wires, often labelled TX and RX. It matters because this module is designed to replace a wired UART cable with a wireless link while keeping the same serial data format.
