Add another automated planting zone to your AgXRP setup with this expansion for the AgXRP Starter Kit. It lets students and educators add a second pump and soil moisture sensor, so they can water a second plant independently and compare soil conditions or watering schedules side by side.
The pack includes the hardware needed to build an additional peristaltic pump and monitor a second plant bed. It is designed to connect to the XRP Controller in the main kit using its motor drivers and daisy-chainable Qwiic connectors.
- Additional pump hardware: hobby motor with encoder, deep-groove ball bearings, latex tubing, and an AgXRP single-pump enclosure frame
- Soil monitoring: one extra SparkFun Qwiic Soil Moisture Sensor
- Connection: 500 mm flexible Qwiic cable
You can add up to three of these expansion packs to a base AgXRP Starter Kit, allowing up to four independent planting zones in total. As a beta release, it is well suited to classroom experiments, STEM programs, and pilot agricultural automation projects.
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- encoder
- A device attached to a motor or shaft that reports movement, such as rotation steps or position. In a pump system, an encoder can help measure or control how much the motor has turned, which affects how repeatable the watering amount can be.
- peristaltic pump
- A pump that moves liquid by squeezing flexible tubing in a rolling motion, so the liquid only touches the inside of the tube. This matters for classroom watering projects because it can dose small amounts of water without needing the pump mechanism to be in contact with the water.
- Qwiic
- Qwiic is a plug-in connector system for I2C devices that uses small 4-pin cables, so you can connect compatible sensors without soldering. It matters because your controller or adapter also needs Qwiic, or you will need a cable or breakout to wire it up.
