The Waveshare Modbus POE ETH Relay 16CH is an industrial-grade 16-channel relay module controlled over Ethernet using Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP protocol. It features dual Ethernet ports for cascading, Power over Ethernet (PoE) support to IEEE 802.3af, and optocoupler-isolated relay drivers with flyback diode protection.
Each of the 16 relay channels provides both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts rated at up to 10A @ 250VAC or 30VDC. The module supports configuration via software, web browser, or DHCP, and is also compatible with HTTP and MQTT protocols (including Alibaba Cloud MQTT). Housed in a DIN rail-mountable ABS enclosure for industrial installations.
Key Features
- 16 Relay Channels – Each with 1NO + 1NC contacts, rated ≤10A @ 250VAC / 30VDC
- Dual Ethernet Ports – Communication cascading for multi-device setups
- PoE Support – IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet, reducing cabling requirements
- Modbus RTU/TCP – Industry-standard protocol support via TCP and UDP
- HTTP & MQTT – Additional protocol support for IoT and cloud integration

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- DIN
- DIN means data in, the pin where this display receives data from the controller. Connecting DIN to the correct SPI data output pin is needed for the screen to receive pixel and command information.
- DIN rail
- DIN rail is a standard metal mounting rail used inside industrial electrical cabinets. DIN rail mounting matters because it lets the controller be installed neatly alongside power supplies, relays, and other automation hardware.
- IoT
- Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
- Modbus
- Modbus is an industrial communication protocol used by many meters, sensors, PLCs, and automation devices. Modbus support matters because it can make the controller easier to integrate with existing industrial equipment.
- Modbus RTU
- Modbus RTU is a version of Modbus commonly used over RS485 serial wiring. It matters if you need to connect the controller to industrial sensors, meters, or drives that use serial Modbus rather than Ethernet.
- Modbus TCP
- Modbus TCP is a version of Modbus that runs over Ethernet networks. It matters when connecting the controller to industrial systems that communicate over standard network cabling.
- MQTT
- A lightweight messaging protocol often used for IoT devices to publish and receive data through a server called a broker. It matters for home automation and sensor networks because it is simple, efficient, and widely supported.
- PoE
- Power over Ethernet lets one Ethernet cable carry both network data and electrical power. This is useful when installing a device where running a separate power adaptor would be difficult.
- Terminal block
- A connector used to join wires together in a neat, removable, or serviceable way. For this product, it helps split one power input into several outputs without soldering.
