This square TFT display module is made for advanced projects that need a high-resolution 4 inch panel in a compact, symmetrical format. It offers 480x480 16-bit full-colour pixels and uses an IPS display, so colour remains strong up to 80 degrees off-axis in any direction.

The display is driven by an ST7701S controller and uses both SPI and TTL RGB “dot clock” data. SPI is only used to configure the display — pixels cannot be drawn over SPI — so you will need hardware that can drive TTL RGB TFT displays directly.

This module is best suited to powerful boards such as an ESP32-S3 with octal PSRAM, or a Raspberry Pi using direct-DPI or an intermediary chip such as the ICN6211. It is not intended for everyday Feather or Arduino wiring unless your hardware specifically supports RGB-666 displays and the correct pinout.

This is the display module only; no PCB is included. Although it has a 40-pin connector, the pinout is not the same as standard rectangular 800x480 or 480x272 TFT displays.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

ESP32
ESP32 is a family of microcontroller modules with built-in wireless features such as Bluetooth and WiFi. Knowing this product uses an ESP32-based module helps explain how it provides wireless serial communication and firmware update features.
IPS
IPS is a type of LCD panel that keeps colours and contrast more consistent when viewed from an angle. This matters for small displays that may be mounted in a dashboard, handheld project, or enclosure where the viewer is not always looking straight on.
octal PSRAM
Octal PSRAM is external pseudo-static RAM that uses an eight-line data interface for higher bandwidth than simpler memory connections. It matters for display projects because large screens and animations can need more working memory than the microcontroller has built in.
PCB
A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
RGB
Short for red, green and blue, usually referring to an LED that can mix those three colours. It matters because controlling an RGB LED teaches how separate outputs combine to create different colours.
RGB-666
A parallel display colour interface that sends 6 bits each for red, green and blue, using many pins to stream pixel data to a screen. It matters because RGB-666 panels need a driver board with the right connector, timing signals, and software setup, rather than the simpler wiring used by small SPI displays.
SPI
A fast serial communication bus often used for displays, memory cards, and sensors. It matters because SPI devices need specific pins for clock and data, plus a separate chip-select line for each device.
TFT
A thin-film transistor display is a common type of colour LCD used for graphics screens. Knowing a product is for TFTs helps you check that the driver board matches the display’s connector, resolution, backlight, and signalling method.
