The SparkFun Wireless Joystick Kit gives you a customisable wireless controller for XBee-based projects. Built around the SAMD21 microcontroller, it provides a flexible alternative to hobby RC transmitters — configure it your way at a fraction of the cost.
The kit can be assembled in two configurations: dual joysticks for tank-style steering, or a single joystick with four 12mm momentary push buttons for a retro gamepad layout. Just add your own XBee module and lithium-ion battery into the provided sockets and you're ready to go.
Key Features
- SAMD21 Microcontroller – Powerful, Arduino-compatible processor on board
- Dual Configuration – Build with two joysticks or one joystick plus four buttons
- XBee Socket – Add any XBee module for wireless communication
- LiPo Battery Socket – On-board socket for portable power
- Fully Customisable – Program your own control scheme and button mappings

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- LiPo
- A LiPo (lithium polymer) battery is a rechargeable lithium battery widely used in portable projects because it is light and compact. LiPo cells need correct charging circuitry and careful handling to stay safe, so equipment that supports LiPo generally includes charging or protection hardware suited to that battery type.
- microcontroller
- A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
- SAMD21
- The SAMD21 is a Microchip (formerly Atmel) 32-bit Arm Cortex-M0+ microcontroller used in many Arduino-compatible boards. The exact chip affects which libraries, clock speeds and peripheral features are available, so software needs to support the SAMD21 specifically.
