This compact breakout board makes it easy to bring a female DE9 connector, often called DB9, onto a breadboard or into a custom wiring harness.

All nine connector pins are broken out to 0.1in-spaced plated through-hole pads, along with two extra ground connections. It is handy for RS-232-style projects, legacy serial cabling, test fixtures and panel-mounted interfaces.

The board includes two mounting holes sized for 4-40 screws, and documentation is available for the schematic, KiCad files and board dimensions.

Features:

  • Female DE9/DB9 Connector
  • 0.1in. Plated Through-Hole PTH Pins
  • 2x Mounting Holes

Specifications:

  • Connector: Female DE9/DB9
  • Pin breakout: All nine pins
  • Extra ground connections: Two
  • Header spacing: 0.1in.
  • Header type: Plated through-hole (PTH)
  • Dimensions: 1.25in. x 0.9in. (31.75mm x 22.86mm)
  • Mounting holes: Two
  • Mounting screw compatibility: 4-40 screw

A simple hardware breakout for makers, repairers and engineers working with DE9/DB9 connectors in prototypes or permanent builds.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

breakout
A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
DE9/DB9
A 9-pin D-shaped connector commonly used on older computer serial ports, industrial equipment, and test gear. The name matters because it tells you the connector has nine pins in a D-shaped shell, so any cable, adapter, or breakout you pair with it must match that pinout.
PTH
Plated through-hole means the pin holes are metal-lined so solder connects the pad on both sides of the board. It is useful for connectors and headers that need a strong mechanical and electrical connection.
RS-232
RS-232 is an older serial communication standard that uses higher, inverted signal voltages (typically around plus or minus 3 to 15 volts) rather than the low logic levels of modern microcontroller pins. When connecting RS-232 equipment to a microcontroller, you usually need an RS-232 transceiver or level converter rather than wiring it directly, or you risk damaging the pins.
through-hole
A mounting style where the component leads pass through holes in a circuit board and are soldered on the other side. Through-hole parts are often easier to handle and solder by hand, which is useful for classroom and hobby projects.
