The MQ-2 is a smoke and combustible gas sensor manufactured by Winsen. It detects flammable gases and smoke in a concentration range of 300–10,000 ppm, with particularly high sensitivity to propane and smoke. It's widely used in domestic gas leakage alarms and portable gas detectors.

The sensing element uses tin dioxide (SnO₂), which has lower conductivity in clean air and higher conductivity when combustible gas or smoke is present. By measuring this change in conductivity with a simple voltage divider circuit, you can convert the sensor's output into usable data. Some calibration is required for accurate readings.

Key Features

  • Wide Detection Range – 300–10,000 ppm for combustible gases
  • High Sensitivity – Especially responsive to propane, smoke, methane, and hydrogen
  • SnO₂ Sensing Element – Reliable resistance-based detection principle
  • Simple Interface – Analogue output; pair with a breakout board or voltage divider circuit

Specifications

  • Sensor Model – MQ-2
  • Detectable Gases – LPG, propane, methane, hydrogen, smoke, alcohol
  • Detection Range – 300–10,000 ppm
  • Sensing Material – Tin dioxide (SnO₂)
  • Heater Voltage – 5 V

Ideal For

  • Domestic gas leak detection
  • Smoke and fire alarm projects
  • Air quality monitoring prototypes
Warning: This sensor is intended for hobbyist and prototyping use only. Do not rely on it as a sole safety device for gas leak or fire detection.

Package Contents

  • 1× MQ-2 Smoke and Gas Sensor

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

breakout
A breakout is a small circuit board that makes a tiny or hard-to-solder component easier to connect to with standard pins. It matters because this OLED module can be wired into a microcontroller project without needing to solder directly to the display’s fine contacts.
ppm
ppm means parts per million, a common way to express very small gas concentrations in air. For CO₂ sensors, the ppm range tells you what levels the sensor can measure, such as normal indoor air through to poorly ventilated spaces.
