This RGB LED module gives your microcontroller project a simple way to add full-colour light. It uses a common-cathode through-hole RGB LED, with separate red, green and blue channels for mixing colours.

Each colour channel has a built-in current-limiting resistor, helping protect the LED from burnout without needing extra resistors on a breadboard. Drive the R, G and B pins with PWM from an Arduino or other 5 V microcontroller to create a wide range of colours.

The module uses a straightforward 4-pin connection for red, green, blue and ground. The package includes 1× RGB LED module.

GND
GND is the ground or reference connection (0 V) for a circuit. When connecting two devices together, their grounds must be joined so both agree on what counts as a low or high signal.
LED
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.

Short for red, green and blue, the three primary colours of light that are mixed in varying amounts to make a wide range of colours. In electronics RGB can refer to an LED or pixel that blends these three colours, or to a colour signal or interface that carries separate red, green and blue channels.
through-hole
A mounting style where the component leads pass through holes in a circuit board and are soldered on the other side. Through-hole parts are often easier to handle and solder by hand, which is useful for classroom and hobby projects.
