Introduction

RainbowLink is a high-performance USB protocol converter designed for multi-channel serial communication and power output, making it ideal for IoT and industrial applications. It integrates four independent communication channelsRS485, RS232, and two TTL channels—into a single device, providing a versatile, all-in-one solution for engineers managing diverse communication protocols.

Compatible with Windows and Linux, as well as devices like LattePanda and Raspberry Pi, RainbowLink is driver-free for most applications, with optional drivers available for enhanced functionality. Additionally, it provides simultaneous 12V, 5V, and 3.3V power outputs, eliminating the need for external power supplies, making it perfect for industrial, agricultural, and laboratory environments.

Key Features

Quick-Connect Lever Terminals for Easy Wiring

RainbowLink features lever-type quick-connect terminals, enabling fast, tool-free wiring. Designed for over 2000 connect-disconnect cycles, these terminals accommodate both pin headers and sockets, ensuring a secure and organized setup while minimizing preparation time and connection errors.

Four Independent Communication Channels

This compact converter includes:

  • 1× RS485 channel
  • 1× RS232 channel
  • 2× TTL channels

Each channel operates independently, allowing engineers to monitor and control multiple serial devices simultaneously, eliminating the need for multiple converters and reducing clutter in complex setups.

Versatile Power Output Options

RainbowLink offers three built-in voltage outputs, providing flexibility for various testing needs:

  • 12V (800mA)
  • 5V (2A max via Type-C, 500mA via USB-A)
  • 3.3V (200mA)

This eliminates the need for external power sources, making it ideal for sensor testing in remote or field environments.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

baud
Baud is the signalling rate of a serial connection, often used as the speed setting for UART communication. Matching the baud rate matters because both connected devices must use the same setting for readable data.
Headers
Rows of connector contacts on a fixed pitch (commonly 2.54 mm) used to link a board to a breadboard, jumper wires, or another board. They come as male pin headers and female socket headers; when a module ships with pre-soldered headers it can be used straight away, whereas bare pads require soldering the pins yourself.
IoT
Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
RS485
RS485 is a robust differential serial communication standard often used in factories, farms and buildings where cables may be long or electrically noisy, and it can link many devices on a single pair of wires. When a product lists RS485, it can communicate with industrial sensors, meters and control equipment over longer distances than typical hobby serial wiring.
Type-C
USB Type-C (USB-C) is a small, reversible USB connector used for charging, power, and data transfer on many modern devices. A Type-C port or plug indicates the cable and charger connection needed to power, charge, or communicate with a device.
USB to serial converter
A chip that converts a USB connection into the serial (UART) signals a microcontroller understands. A board that includes one usually appears to a computer as a serial port for programming and debugging, rather than as a native USB device such as a keyboard or mass-storage drive.
