The SK6812B 4020 is a side-emitting NeoPixel-compatible RGB LED with an integrated driver chip. Unlike standard top-emitting LEDs, these emit light at 90° from the PCB surface, making them ideal for edge-lit designs, light pipes, and compact indicator arrays.
Each 4 × 2 mm SMD package contains red, green, and blue LEDs driven by an internal controller that accepts 24-bit colour data via a single-wire protocol. The ~18 mA constant-current driver ensures consistent colour regardless of voltage variation, with no external resistors required. Power with 5 V DC.
Key Features
- Side-Emitting – Light output at 90° from the PCB, perfect for edge-lit effects
- NeoPixel Compatible – Works with the Adafruit NeoPixel library and any NeoPixel-compatible code
- Chainable – Connect output to input to create strips of any length
- Integrated Driver – 24-bit colour control with ~18 mA constant-current per channel
- Compact 4020 Package – Just 4 × 2 mm, the most space-efficient way to add addressable RGB LEDs
- 5 V DC Operation – No external resistors needed
Ideal For
- Custom side-emitting LED strips and arrays
- Edge-lit signs and displays
- Compact indicator lights on custom PCBs
Package Contents
- 10× SK6812B 4020 side-emitting RGB LEDs (on a strip)

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- constant-current driver
- A constant-current driver supplies a set current even as the load voltage changes. For a TFT backlight, this helps keep brightness stable and prevents the LEDs from being overdriven.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
- microcontroller
- A microcontroller is a small computer on a chip that runs your program and controls connected inputs and outputs. For this product, it is the part that reads buttons and sensors, drives the display and speaker, and communicates over Bluetooth.
- NeoPixel
- A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
- RGB
- Short for red, green and blue, usually referring to an LED that can mix those three colours. It matters because controlling an RGB LED teaches how separate outputs combine to create different colours.
