The ElecFreaks Smart Home Kit is a micro:bit project kit for building interactive smart home models. It includes sensors, actuators, and cardboard building materials to create miniature scenes — a windowsill, wardrobe, fish tank, and more — all programmable with MakeCode or MicroPython via the micro:bit.

The kit is built around the sensor:bit expansion board, which provides easy connections for the included TMP36 temperature sensor, sound sensor, crash sensor, servo, and motor. Five guided project cases walk students through building and programming each smart home scenario.

Included Projects

  • Voice-Activated Light – Sound sensor triggers lighting
  • Smart Fan – Temperature-controlled motor fan
  • Auto Windows – Servo-driven window that responds to conditions
  • Auto Wardrobe – Automated wardrobe door mechanism
  • Water Level Detector – Monitor water levels in a model fish tank

Key Components

  • sensor:bit Expansion BoardBreakout board for micro:bit with sensor ports
  • TMP36 Temperature Sensor – Analogue temperature measurement
  • Sound Sensor – Detects ambient noise levels
  • Crash Sensor – Simple contact/collision detection
  • Servo Motor – For doors, windows, and moving parts
  • DC Motor – For fan and rotating mechanisms
  • Cardboard Building Materials – Pre-cut pieces for smart home models

Ideal For

  • Classroom STEM and coding activities
  • Learning about sensors, actuators, and automation
  • Creative micro:bit projects for ages 8+
Note: BBC micro:bit board is not included and must be purchased separately.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

breakout
A breakout is a small circuit board that makes a tiny or hard-to-solder component easier to connect to with standard pins. It matters because this OLED module can be wired into a microcontroller project without needing to solder directly to the display’s fine contacts.
MicroPython
A version of the Python programming language made to run on microcontrollers. It matters because it lets beginners write readable code to control LEDs, sensors, motors and displays without needing to start with lower-level languages.
servo
A servo is a motor with built-in position control, usually told to move to a specific angle by a control signal. It matters when you need repeatable movement, such as steering, arms, flaps, or linkages, rather than continuous spinning.
servo motor
A motor module that moves to a commanded angle rather than simply spinning freely. It matters for robotics and mechanisms because it is useful for steering, arms, gates and other parts that need controlled position.
