The Insectbot Hexa is a six-legged walking robot kit based on the Beetle BLE (Arduino-compatible with Bluetooth 4.0). Designed for kids and beginners, this DIY kit teaches soldering, assembly, and basic programming through a hands-on robotics project.
Powered by three 9 g micro servos and four AAA batteries, the Insectbot walks steadily on six legs and features an IR range sensor for obstacle avoidance. The Beetle BLE controller supports wireless programming and communication via Bluetooth 4.0, and is programmable through the Arduino IDE (select Arduino UNO as the board) or the graphical Ardublock environment.
Key Features

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- BLE
- BLE stands for Bluetooth Low Energy, a Bluetooth mode designed for lower power use and modern phone compatibility. It matters because BLE support can make the module easier to use with Apple devices and battery-powered projects, though it may behave differently from classic serial Bluetooth.
- IDE
- Short for Integrated Development Environment, a program used to write, run and manage code. It matters because some learners prefer a traditional coding workspace instead of a guided notebook-style lesson.
- Shield
- An add-on board that plugs into a main controller board to give it extra features such as sensing, motor control or communication. Knowing a product supports shields helps you judge whether it can connect neatly into an existing maker-board setup.
