This learn-to-solder lamp kit lets you build a simple USB-powered light with an inline rocker switch. It is a great hands-on project for beginners practising through-hole soldering and basic circuit assembly.

Once assembled, the LED board can be used as the lighting core for your own custom lamp design. Add a timber, 3D printed, laser-cut or handmade enclosure to turn it into a personalised desk light or classroom project.

The kit includes the LED PCB, bright white LEDs, resistors, switch, USB cable and wire needed for the build. You will just need your own soldering tools and a design idea for the finished lamp.

Kit includes:

  • 1 x LED PCB
  • 8 x bright white LEDs
  • 10 x 100 ohm resistors
  • 1 x rocker switch
  • 1 x USB cable
  • 2 x lengths of wire

You will need:

  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • An idea!

Ideal for maker workshops, school classes and anyone wanting a compact soldering project that can be customised after assembly.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

LED
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
PCB
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
through-hole
A mounting style where the component leads pass through holes in a circuit board and are soldered on the other side. Through-hole parts are often easier to handle and solder by hand, which is useful for classroom and hobby projects.
