A set of digital callipers that will not break the bank when you need thirty of them. Made from a carbon fibre composite rather than steel, so they are light in the hand, will not rust, and survive being dropped on a workshop floor rather better than you would expect.

These read out on an LCD instead of a traditional vernier scale, which removes the most common source of student error: misreading the sliding scale. You still get all four classic measurements.

Four measurements, one tool

  • Outside diameter using the lower jaws, for shaft and stock sizes
  • Inside diameter using the upper jaws, for bores and holes
  • Depth using the tail rod
  • Step using the back of the slide

Zero the display at any position along the beam. That makes comparative measurement straightforward: set zero on your reference, then read the difference directly instead of subtracting two numbers.

Specifications

  • Measuring range: 0 to 150mm / 0 to 6 inch
  • Resolution: 0.1mm / 0.01 inch
  • Body: carbon fibre composite
  • Display: LCD, 40 × 15mm
  • Power: one cell battery, included (LR44 / SR44 or CR2032)
  • Metric and imperial, switchable

A note for teachers

Resolution here is 0.1mm, not 0.01mm. That is the right call for most classroom work and it is what keeps these affordable as a class set, but it is worth knowing before you build an assessment task around a tighter tolerance. If students need to measure to a hundredth of a millimetre, you want a metal micrometer instead.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

LCD
LCD stands for liquid crystal display, a screen technology that uses a backlight and liquid crystals to show images or text. It matters because LCD modules usually need a display driver and enough controller pins or a bus interface to send image data.
Tolerance
Tolerance tells you how far the real resistance value may be from the printed value. A 1% resistor is useful when a circuit needs more predictable behaviour than a looser 5% or 10% part.
