Digital Laser Tachometer - Non-Contact RPM Meter, 2.5 to 99,999 RPM

Point it at a spinning thing and read the RPM straight off the screen. No coupling, no contact, nothing to load the shaft down and change the very number you are trying to measure.

Stick a reflective marker on whatever is turning, aim the laser at it, and hold the button. The meter counts reflections and does the arithmetic.

What you would use it for

Anywhere you need a real number for rotational speed rather than an estimate:

• Measuring a motor's actual loaded speed against its datasheet figure
• Proving a gear ratio experimentally instead of on paper, by measuring input and output shafts
• Checking a lathe or drill press is running at the speed the dial claims
• Recording wind turbine or fan speed as test data

The meter holds the last reading and the minimum reading in memory, so you can take a measurement in an awkward spot and read it back once your hands are free.

Batteries are not included, and neither is reflective tape. If you are setting up a class, order a roll of reflective tape alongside these so every group can mark up their own test rig.

A note for teachers

This is a laser instrument, low power but still a laser. The usual rule applies and is worth stating to a class before you hand thirty of them out: aim it at the target, never at a person, and never at anyone's eyes. Beyond that it is about as safe a piece of test gear as you can put in a student's hand, because nothing ever touches the moving part.
