A rewarding first soldering project that brings one of Forrest M. Mims III's classic hand-drawn circuits to life. With just nine components, you'll build a satisfying dual LED flasher that blinks alternately — a great introduction to the analog side of electronics.
Designed by Star Simpson as part of the Circuit Classics series, this beautifully crafted PCB pairs Mims' iconic circuit designs with exquisite board artwork. It makes a perfect gift for a first-time learner, an expert tinkerer, or as a conversation piece for your desk.
Key Features
- Beginner Friendly – Only nine through-hole components to solder
- Classic Circuit Design – Based on Forrest M. Mims III's iconic hand-drawn schematics
- Beautiful PCB Artwork – Finely crafted board designed for display
- Includes Display Stand – Wooden stand for showing off your finished project
- Flexible Power Options – Use alligator clips with any battery/power supply, or solder the included SMT coin cell clip
Assembly Overview
- Assemble components from shortest to tallest: resistors first, then transistors, capacitors, and LEDs
- Use the included wooden stand to hold the board at an angle while soldering
- Attach the SMT battery clip to the reverse side as a final step
- Clean flux residue with the included alcohol pad for a polished finish
Required Tools (Not Included)
- Soldering iron

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- alligator clip
- An alligator clip is a spring-loaded metal clip used to make temporary electrical connections to wires, terminals or test points. It is useful for quick bench testing, but it is less secure than a screw terminal or locking connector.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
